Discussion of history, current programs and future issues will be covered. Topics will include the relationship between animals and man, zoo conservation programs, extinction issues, and human impact on animal conservation.

 REQUIRED COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 1. Explain the importance of conservation for animals in captivity.
 2. Research the various options of conservation and look at what is being done in this area.
 3. Examine various zoo facilities and understand how each of them has addressed the conservation issue.
 4. Compare and contrast the differences between conservation and preservation and apply these definitions to different zoo philosophies.
 5. Explain a zoo’s past, present and future evolution.

 I.    Animal menageries-the evolution of zoos.
 II.    Modern zoos and their mission statements.
 III.    The captive conservation world (AZA, SSP, TAG and Studbooks).
 IV.    Exhibit design and construction for conservation strategies.
 V.    Animal enrichment and its importance.
 VI.    Endangered and Threatened species and issues.
 VII.    Zoo responsibilities and strategies for saving these species.
 VIII.    Ex situ versus in situ conservation and the roles zoos play.
 IX.    Ethics of captive breeding programs and reintroduction.
