  Course Description:Surveys gender socialization and the roles, challenges, contributions, and images of women in the development of cultures. Through a study of arts, literature, music, politics, religion, philosophy, laws, and social standards students are introduced to the history of ideas that have defined women's place in societies. It examines goddesses, rituals, and ceremonies and how the image of the Feminine Divine changed from matriarchal cultures through the establishment of patriarchal cultures. These topics will be viewed through diverse cultures, including European and non-European, from the Ancient World through the Middle Ages.~~This course is one of the Statewide Guaranteed Transfer courses.  STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1.   Interpret systems of oppression and evaluate the impact on women from prehistory through middle ages.
 2.   Explore women's roles in prehistory and in the development of civilization.
 3.   Analyze gender roles throughout history and in various societies and cultures.
 4.   Explore matriarchal societies, goddesses they worshipped, and their rituals and ceremonies.
 5.   Explore the daily lives, laws, societal standards, challenges, and contributions of women from ancient and medieval cultures.
 6.   Examine images of women in ancient art and literature.
 7.   Identify women who overcame challenges and contributed to social change in ancient and medieval societies.
 8.   Research and present information about goddesses and women individually and/or within a group.
