  Course Description:Examines the nature and function of women in society from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on the similarity and diversity of women`s experience over time and across cultures. The course will examine topics such as sex role, socialization, political, and philosophical perspectives on women`s issues, and women`s accomplishments in history, art, literature, science, health issues and the family. Students will gain an awareness of the limitations of traditional scholarship on women, and gain a means of practical application of the new scholarship on women`s roles and nature.~~This course is one of the Statewide Guaranteed Transfer courses. GT-SS3

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1.   Analyze and evaluate issues of difference including (but not limited to) sex, race, class sexual identity, age, ability, religion and white ethnocentrism within a feminist framework.
 2.   Evaluate the influence of various media and advertising on the way women are viewed and view themselves.
 3.   Interpret issues of violence in women`s lives and the impact it makes on how women live and how women are socialized.
 4.   Define and evaluate tools needed for social and political change.
 5.   Interpret consequences of age and ability in women`s lives.
 6.   Recognize importance of health issues particularly as they apply to how women are treated by the medical profession.
 7.   Identify and evaluate the intersections of race, class and gender, consequences of a heterosexist society and value of knowing women`s history in shaping women`s lives.
 8.   Recognize the impact of white ethnocentrism and white privilege on U.S. society.
 9.   Evaluate how white privilege perpetuates the systems of oppression.
 10. Examine women`s role in the work place and family: evaluate its impact on women`s liberation.
 11. Examine issues of self-esteem and assertiveness and how women are socialized to see themselves in a male-centered world while examining strategies for personal change.
