  Course Description:Introduces design and construction of welded sculptures with the use of different fabrication techniques. This course includes uses of different metalworking machines, hot and cold working practices, and demonstration of coloring and texturing metal.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Understand weld shop safety.
 2. Demonstrate proper equipment use.
 3. Demonstrate basic gas metal and shielded metal arc welding skill.
 4. Demonstrate basic oxy/acetylene and plasma cutting skill.
 5. Demonstrate measurement, squaring, leveling, and jig making.
 6. Develop project plans with dimensions and welding symbols.
 7. Develop cost effective plans for projects.
 8. Create projects using all techniques and fabrication machines for metalworking.


 TOPIAL OUTLINE:
 
 I. SHOP SAFETY AND PROPER EQUIPMENT USE
 • Demonstrate equipment set up and safe use of fabrication tools.
 • Knowledge of basic OSHA regulations for a weld shop.
 • Welder safety.
 
 II. BASIC GAS METAL AND SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING SKILLS
 • Equipment set up.
 • Tack and fillet welds in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.
 • Ability to perform GMAW short circuit transfer.
 • Ability to perform welding with SMAW equipment.
 
 
 III. BASIC OXY-FUEL AND PLASMA CUTTING
 • Equipment set up of oxy-fuel and plasma cutting systems (manual and auto).
 • Perform neat and clean cuts on carbon steel of 10 gage to ½” thickness.
 • Ability to heat and form carbon steel.
 
 
 IV. DEVELOPMENT OF PROJECT PLANS
 • Measurement, squaring, leveling, bracing to avoid distortion.
 • Bracing and jig building.
 • Welding symbols.
 • Ability to find ideas for projects on internet.
 • Ability to obtain relevant information from pictures and basic shop drawings.
 • Ability to design and interpret dimensions and notes.
 
 V. ECONOMICS OF FABRICATION
 • Estimating for metal fabricators.
 • Basic marketing principals.
 • Ability to design economically.
 
 
 VI. METAL FABRICATION
 • Use of fabrication machines
 • Cold Working
 • Hot Working
 • Coloring metal with an oxy/acetylene torch
