 REQUIRED COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 1.  Recognize and explain the fundamentals of the SMAW Process.
 2.  Demonstrate safety inspections on SMAW equipment.
 3.  Set up for SMAW operations on plain carbon steel.
 4.  Select proper electrode and welding procedures according to the steel being welded.
 5.  Operate SMAW equipment.
 6.  Demonstrate padding using SMAW in the Horizontal, Vertical Up and Overhead positions.
 7.  Demonstrate Butt Joint and Groove welds with backing using SMAW in the Horizontal, Vertical Up and Overhead positions.
 8.  Demonstrate fillet welds using SMAW in the Horizontal, Vertical up and Overhead positions.
 9.  Explain the American Welding Society (AWS) electrode classification system.
 10.  Demonstrate knowledge of the AWS D15.1 code, as it pertains to qualification testing for unlimited thickness, in the 2G, 3G, and 4G positions, using SMAW.
 11.  Apply knowledge of the AWS D15.1 visual acceptance criteria to weld inspection utilizing weld inspection gages.
 12.  Pass AWS D15.1 welder certification tests meeting the following requirements: V groove with backing in the Horizontal, Vertical up and Overhead positions using SMAW.


 REQUIRED TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 I.    Follow shop safety practices
 II.    Maintain a clean, safe work area
 III.    Prepare assigned records
 IV.    Follow assigned instructions to complete work assignments
 V.    Identify the basic welding joints and welding positions
 VI.    Perform safety inspections on SMAW equipment
 VII.    Make minor external repairs as necessary to SMAW equipment
 VIII.    Set up for SMAW on plain carbon steel
 IX.    Demonstrate understanding of the AWS electrode classification system
 X.    Select proper electrode and welding procedures according to the steel being welded
 XI.    Participate in assigned fabrication projects
 XII.    Operate SMAW equipment
 XIII.    Pad in the Horizontal, Vertical Up and Overhead positions
 XIV.    Perform fillet welds in Tee joints Horizontal, Vertical Up and Overhead positions.  Leg dimension specified by instructor
 XV.    Simulated butt joint (2) in the Horizontal, Vertical Up and Overhead positions
 XVI.    Perform V-groove welds with backing to D15.1 specifications.
 XVII.    Recognize and explain the fundamentals of  the SMAW
 XVIII.    Demonstrate an understanding of the AWS D15.1 code, as it pertains to qualification testing for unlimited thickness, in the 2G, 3G, and 4G positions, using SMAW
 XIX.    Demonstrate an understanding of the AWS D15.1 weld inspection requirements and how to utilize weld inspection gages
 XX.    Demonstrate proper techniques in preparing test coupons
 XXI.    AWS D15.1 Code test: Horizontal v-groove with backing to D15.1 specifications
 XXII.    AWS D15.1 Code test: Vertical up v-groove with backing to D15.1 specifications.
 XXIII.    AWS D15.1 Code test: Overhead v-groove with backing to D15.1 Specifications
