Course Description: | Continues the development of simultaneous interpretation skills from TRI 202 Simultaneous Interpretation I, with more focus on the quality of the rendition. Students develop further linguistic agility and coping skills, and practice with higher complexity texts. They learn research and analysis skills required for adequate professional preparation. Additional attention is paid to the work with portable simultaneous interpreting equipment, and in a team environment. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Demonstrate the basics of research required to prepare for assignments.
2. Exercise linguistic agility in maneuvering vocabularies and grammatical structures.
3. Demonstrate simultaneous interpreting skills in legal and community settings at higher speeds, while still maintaining the integrity of the sentence.
4. Provide simultaneous interpretation services with the use of simultaneous equipment and in a team setting.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Research basics and resources available internally and externally to the college
II. Review printed scripts and practice maneuvering grammatical and semantic structures
III. Practice interpreting into the target language:
a. with additions and contractions
b. while changing the register
c. with long décalage
IV. Practice interpreting with simultaneous equipment and with a partner
V. Advanced interpreting skills in court settings
a. Practice with criminal cases
b. Practice with civil cases
VI. Advanced interpreting skills in community settings. May include any of the following:
a. Medical and psychological evaluations
b. Academic settings
c. Administrative hearings
d. Social security
e. Immigration
f. Public housing hearings
