STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Examine methods for assessing levels in grammar, speaking/listening, and reading/ writing, of prospective ESL students.
II. Understand basic theories, concepts, terms, and vocabulary related to second language acquisition and how they apply to ESL/EFL teaching.
III. Study and critique various methodologies for teaching ESL/EFL. These include traditional methods (Grammar-Translation, Direct , and Audio-Lingual methods), alternative methods (The Silent Way, Suggestopedia, Community Language Learning, Total Physical Response) and more current communicative approaches (The Natural Approach, Cooperative Language Learning, Content Based and Task Instruction) for second language teaching and learning.
IV. Observe and/or practice various techniques and activities for classroom teaching from the various methodologies.
V. Articulate and discuss `real life` trends, issues, and challenges for the current ESL/EFL work environment.
VI. Explore ESL resources available through the internet.
