Course Description: | Provides clinical hands-on experience for student to perform surgical technology duties in the first-scrub, second-scrub, and observation role during any given surgical procedure with proficiency and increased complexity while progressing towards entry-level graduate achievement. Clinical experience will be documented by procedure, date and student role while verifying case counts throughout the surgical rotation as defined by accreditation standards through a total of 120 cases. This is the third of three surgical technology clinical internships. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Observe and report cases not to be included in the required minimum total case count in an observation role.
2. Perform duties during any given surgical procedure in its entirety by providing sponging, suctioning, cutting sutures, holding retractors, and/or manipulating an endoscopic camera in a second scrub role.
3. Perform duties during any given surgical procedure in a first-scrub role with proficiency.
4. Verify supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure in a first-scrub role.
5. Set up the sterile field with instruments, supplies, equipment, medication(s), and solutions needed for the procedure in a first-scrub role.
6. Perform counts with the circulator prior to the procedure, before wound closure begins, and before the final layer is closed in a first-scrub role.
7. Pass instruments and supplies to the sterile surgical team members during the procedure in a first-scrub role.
8. Maintain sterile technique as measured by recognized breaks in technique and demonstrate knowledge of how to correct with appropriate technique in a first-scrub role.

III. Surgical Procedures
a. The total number of cases the student must complete is 120 cases within the surgical technology clinical externship I, II, and III
i. General Surgical Procedures: 30 cases
1. Minimum of 20 cases in the first-scrub role
2. Maximum of 10 cases in the second-scrub role
ii. Specialty Surgical Procedures: 90 cases
1. Minimum of 60 cases in the first -scrub role and evenly distributed between a minimum of 5 surgical specialties.
2. Maximum of 30 cases in the second scrub role.
iii. Endoscopic Surgical Procedures:
1. Diagnostic endoscopy cases are not mandatory but up to 10 diagnostic endoscopic cases can be counted towards maximum number of second-scrub role cases
iv. Vaginal Delivery Procedures:
1. Vaginal delivery cases are not mandatory but up to 5 vaginal delivery cases can be counted towards maximum number of second-scrub role cases
