Course Description: | Introduces the history and materials used in the manufacture of surgical instruments, as well as the methods used to maintain, clean, and sterilize surgical instrumentation and equipment. Students will learn supplies, equipment, and the names, category, and use of instrumentation used in general, obstetric and gynecologic, otorhinolaryngology, oral, maxillofacial, plastic, reconstructive and ophthalmic surgical specialties. This course is the first of two courses. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Identify surgical supplies, equipment, and the names, category, and use of instrumentation in general,
obstetric and gynecologic, otorhinolaryngology, oral, maxillofacial, plastic, reconstructive and ophthalmic surgical specialties.
2. Demonstrate how to assemble and dissemble instrumentation sets
3. Compare and contrast methods for cleaning, decontaminating, and sterilizing instrumentation
4. Evaluate inspection and quality control
5. Perform instrument, sponges, and sharps counts
