Course Description: | Introduces surgical case management and the skills required for the surgical technologist to perform in the first scrub role in a simulated surgical environment. This lab covers mock surgical procedures in general surgery, obstetric and gynecologic surgery, ophthalmic surgery, otorhinolaryngologic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, genitourinary surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, peripheral vascular surgery and neuro surgery surgical specialties. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Demonstrate how to set-up the operating room according to the surgical procedure.
2. Pull the necessary supplies, instrumentation, suture, and equipment for the mock procedure.
3. Exhibit appropriate patient positioning and prepping techniques.
4. Create and organize the sterile field, set up the mayo stand with appropriate instrumentation, and drape
according to the surgical procedure.
5. Perform intraoperative functions by demonstrating the correct procedural steps, passing instrumentation,
loading and unloading blades and suture needles, choosing appropriate supplies, closing suture and dressings.
6. Review proper sharps handling, management of medications and fluids, surgical count procedures, specimen care,
case break down and room turn-over
