Course Description: | Identifies the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and terminology, as well as specific variations in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care related to general, obstetric, gynecologic, ophthalmic, otorhinolaryngologic, oral, maxillary, plastic and reconstructive, genitourinary, orthopedic, cardiothoracic, peripheral vascular, and neuro surgery. Focus will also be placed on diagnostic procedures and tests, operating room set-up according to the surgical procedure, patient positioning, prepping, and draping, instrumentation, equipment, supplies and drugs, procedural steps, purpose and expected outcomes and possible complications. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Recognize relevant anatomy and physiology, including etiology, pathogenesis and epidemiology as it relates to surgical procedures.
2. Analyze the cause and mechanics of human illness and death
3. Indicate the pathology, cause and mechanics of illness, and related terminology of each system or organ that prompts surgical intervention.
4. Evaluate preoperative diagnostic procedures and tests.
5. Indicate special preoperative preparation procedures related to the surgical specialty.
6. Clarify appropriate positioning, prepping and draping of the operative site.
7. Recall the names and uses of special instrumentation, equipment, supplies, and medications related to the surgical specialty.
8. Propose the intraoperative preparations of the patient specific to the surgical specialty.
9. Summarize the surgical steps specific to the surgical specialty.
10. Determine the immediate postoperative care of the patient and possible complications.
11. Review proper sharps handling, management of medications and fluids, surgical count procedures, and specimen care.
12. Distinguish proper break down of the surgical procedure and room turn-over steps.
