Tools and equipment utilized for instrument processing is presented. Instrument decontamination, cleaning, processing and various methods of sterilization is discussed. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES
1. Identify the common chemicals and implements utilized for cleaning and decontaminating instruments and supplies
2. Explain the sources for contamination on items and explain point of use preparation procedures
3. Discuss and explain the flow transport and order of care of decontaminated items
4. Define basic categories of surgical instruments, their function and points of inspection
5. Explain and demonstrate instrument care, inspection and assembly
6. Describe and demonstrate appropriate means of preparation and sterilization of surgical instrumentation
7. Explain the objectives of the packaging process and the specific sterilization methods for all methods of packaging
8. Review and demonstrate appropriate preparation and sterilization of each type of packaging
9. Review and demonstrate appropriate labelling and tracking methodologies
10. Discuss the advantages of high temperature steam sterilization
11. Demonstrate appropriate packaging and labelling for steam sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies
12. Review processes for alternate sterilization processes (Chemical, Solution and ionized)
13. Review and demonstrate appropriate quality control and monitoring for point of use processing
14. Define and demonstrate methods of point use processing
15. Review the importance of effective inventory management
16. Explain common inventory control, distribution and replenishment systems
17. Describe common safety factors applicable to the sterile processing department and explain how worker injuries can be prevented
18. Describe the procedures that address biological, physical and substance hazards and the appropriate safety measures taken to address each one
19. Explain the importance of ergonomics and demonstrate proper lifting and moving of supplies and equipment
20. Discuss the process by which workplace injuries are reported, documented, tracked and the appropriate departments that take part in workplace safety investigation
