STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. The student at the intermediate-high level should be able to:
1. Develop composing skills as they relate to:
rhetorical and stylistic techniques in the target language (description, narration, opinion, hypothesis, abstraction);
organizational techniques (principal ideas, supporting ideas, thesis, focus on the audience);
editing techniques (clarity of presentation, accurate grammatical structures, orthographic rules, and punctuation rules).
2. Apply composing skills in an array of written productions: narratives, descriptions, formal documents, and essays.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the cultural beliefs and values in the target culture.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Phonetics and Pronunciation. Students should:
A. Recognize vowel combinations.
B. Distinguish tonic accents in the word.
II. Target language spelling system. Students should:
A. Identify vowels and consonants.
B. Recall and apply orthography rules.
C. Identify syllable formation.
III. Target language writing system. Students should:
A. Recall and apply the rules for capital case words.
B. Recall and apply the rules for punctuation symbols.
C. Apply rhetorical rules used in formal discourse.
D. Apply stylistic rules used in formal discourse.
IV. Target language grammatical system. Students should:
A. Apply the morphology of Parts of Speech: Nouns; Pronouns, Adjectives, Verbs, and Adverbs.
B. Demonstrate ability to use prepositions.
C. Apply syntactical rules in the creation of simple and subordinated sentences.
D. Recognize and use direct and indirect speech structures.
V. Vocabulary. Students should:
A. Use accurately and meaningfully words, phrases and expressions in formal discourse.
