STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. The student at the intermediate-mid level should be able to:
1. Apply grammatical knowledge of structures and parts of speech accurately, appropriately and meaningfully, orally and in writing.
2. Apply increased formal vocabulary, phrases, and idioms appropriately in oral and written discourse.
3. Read and comprehend selected literary readings.
4. Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate cultural behaviors and values in the target culture.
5. Identify cultural artifacts in the target world.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the geographical area of the target world.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Phonetics and Pronunciation. Students should:
A. Recognize vowel combinations.
B. Distinguish tonic accents in the word.
II. Target language spelling system. Students should:
A. Identify vowels and consonants.
B. Recall and apply orthography rules.
C. Identify syllable formation.
III. Target language writing system. Students should:
A. Recall and apply the rules for capital case words.
B. Recall and apply the rules for punctuation symbols.
IV. Parts of Speech.
A. Nouns. Students should:
B. Recognize nouns in a sentence.
C. Recognize morphology of nouns.
D. Recognize ability to apply noun morphology.
E. Demonstrate ability to create noun phrases.
V. Pronouns. Student should:
A. Distinguish and use subject and object pronouns.
B. Identify possessive; relative; interrogative; indefinite, reflexive pronouns.
C. Demonstrate ability to recognize and use pronouns.
VI. Adjectives (qualitative, possessive, quantitative, indefinite, relative and demonstrative). Students should:
A. Recognize morphology of adjectives.
B. Demonstrate ability to apply morphology and placement of adjectives.
C. Recognize and apply degrees (comparative; superlative).
VII. Verbs. Students should:
A. Recognize verbs in a sentence.
B. Recognize morphology of verbs: tense, number, mood, and voice.
C. Demonstrate ability to create sentences with subject and verb agreement.
D. Active and passive voice.
VIII. Adverbs. Students should:
A. Recognize adverbs in a sentence.
B. Identify and apply the function of adverbs.
C. Recognize and apply degrees (comparative).
IX. Prepositions. Students should:

X Syntax: Case. Students should:
A. Recognize structures in a sentence.
