Course Description: | Introduces the basic vocabulary and expressions useful to travelers in the Spanish speaking countries. The course will concentrate on the customs, traditions and cultural attitudes to be discovered by a visitor to the destination country. Cultural diversity and global awareness are integral to this course of study. This course does not fulfill Humanities Area Requirements. Not intended for transfer. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Ask simple questions and use expressions necessary to the traveler in Spanish speaking countries.
II. Understand common expressions and questions in Spanish.
III. Read printed material often used by travelers.
IV. Write frequently used words and understand basic concepts of grammar.
V. Recognize, appreciate and respect the attitudes and institutions of Hispanic/Latino cultures.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Speaking:
A. use greetings, salutations and expressions of cordiality in Spanish.
B. handle monetary transactions
C. inquire about hotels, transportation, and other reservations.
D. order meals, ride a bus, take a taxi, and go shopping in stores and `mercados.`
E. ask directions.
F. seek help or assistance sometimes in emergency situations
G. employ elements of circumlocution in expressing Spanish
II. Listening:
A. understand simple expressions and questions relating to daily life and places of interest.
B. using recorded tapes for improved ability in comprehension and eventual
III. production
IV. Reading:
A. read materials useful to the traveler such as road signs, public notices, travel schedules, menus, and hotel regulations.
B. using the newspaper as both instructional and informative tool
V. Writing:
A. write and spell correctly words commonly used by travelers filling out
B. various forms
C. write simple sentences which exhibit important grammatical concepts.
VI. Culture:
A. recognize attitudes and customs peculiar to Hispanic/Latino cultures.
B. recognize most common `faux pas`
C. study places of interest to the traveler.
D. recognize linguistic and social diversity of the Spanish speaking world
