 I.      Explore the history of men and fatherhood
         A.      Discuss American fathering in historical perspective
         B.      Delineate your own experiences and understanding of men and masculinities
         C.      Examine your understanding of men¿s roles in parenting and families
 II.     Examine three theories of male gender role development
         A.      Define the four components of the male role
         B.      Discuss the theory of gender role conflict
         C.      Explore the theory of gender role journey
 III.    Explore important issues for fathers
         A.      Describe the issues surrounding male power and patriarchy
         B.      Discuss men¿s roles in various societies and cultures around the world; contrast with own cultural understandings
         C.      Explore the ever-changing roles of men in families
         D.      Describe how the issue of health affects various other issues surrounding men¿s roles
         E.      Examine men¿s roles in the workplace
         F.      Discuss male sexuality
         G.      Understand the roots and perceptions of male violence
         H.      Explore male understandings of friendship and intimacy

         J.      Understand the basis for the men¿s movement and the fatherhood movement
 IV.     Define current issues in men¿s roles in family and society and discuss how they affect your practice in the workplace


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I.      Explain own experiences and understanding of men and masculinities, fathers, families, and parenting in order to promote reflective learning.
 II.     Learn the history of men and fatherhood to create historical awareness.
 III.    Become familiar with three theories of male gender role development to facilitate theory-based analysis.
 IV.     Explore the topics of male power and patriarchy; men and multiculturalism; men in families; male sexuality and violence; men¿s health, work, friendship and intimacy, and spirituality; men at war and at play; men and the cultural arts; men¿s movements; men¿s studies; and the future of masculinities in order to broaden knowledge of the context of fatherhood in America.
 V.      Review fatherhood from a cross-cultural and international perspective to raise global awareness.
 VI.     Select, read, and review articles from the current literature on fatherhood, family studies, and the critical study of men and masculinities in order to enhance knowledge and encourage critical thinking.
