  Course Description:Introduces the students to the basic skill set required to create a successful ski or snowboard backcountry guiding business. Students will be introduced to guiding techniques for touring facilities (hotel or hut), snow cat operations, and heli-skiing operations. Students will gain knowledge of how to educate and instruct their clients. Best practices in snowsport guiding, regulations and certifications will be discussed. Emphasis is placed on the awareness, prevention and management of risk, as well as maximizing client rewards.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Students will be able to select, budget for, and manage standard backcountry equipment for a guiding business.
 
 2. Students will demonstrate understanding of customer service in backcountry guiding businesses.
 
 3. Students will demonstrate an understanding in ski guiding best business practices.
 
 4. Students will plan and market destination ski/snowboarding guided trips.
 
 5. Students will understand and correctly interpret local, national, and international guiding regulations.
 
 6. Students will understand and demonstrate the importance of Leave No Trace practices in guiding businesses.
 
 7. Students will understand IFMGA, AMGA, and other international guiding standards and certifications relevant to the industry.
 
 8. Students will display knowledge in basic backcountry skiing technique.
 
 9. Students will demonstrate knowledge and best practices of risk management and safety for guides and clients.
