Course Description: | Familiarizes the student/ropeway electrical maintenance apprentice with the theory and procedures applicable to electrical wiring and DC motors as used in the North American ropeway industry. Students must be employed as a ropeway maintenance apprentice or a ropeway mechanic/electrician. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Explain the basic principles of three-phase AC motor operation.
II. Explain and demonstrate how to inspect and conduct tests on a three-phase AC motor.
III. Explain and demonstrate how to disconnect, disassemble, clean, reassemble and reconnect a three-phase AC motor.
IV. Identify and explain the characteristics and basic operation of a typical battery system and its components.
V. Explain and demonstrate how to inspect and perform basic tests on industrial batteries.
VI. Explain and describe the operation and basic parts of a DC motor.
VII. Describe and demonstrate basic procedures for maintaining and overhauling a DC motor.
VIII. Identify and describe the main steps of a basic troubleshooting procedure.
IX. Demonstrate the procedure to troubleshoot problems in electrical equipment and electrical systems.
X Explain the control logic used in systems with discrete (digital) I/O.
XI. Describe how to troubleshoot systems that use individual relays and solid state controllers.
XII. Describe and demonstrate how to program a PLC and troubleshoot PLC system problems.
XIII. Describe proportional control, integral control, and derivative control.
XIV. Describe common controller options and applications.
XV. Diagnose problems in single and multiple control loops.
XVI. Explain and demonstrate how to test, adjust, and calibrate various types of gauges and transmitters.
XVII. Explain and demonstrate how to test, set-up and adjust field devices and
XVIII. calibrate control loops.
XIX. Demonstrate safe work practices and procedures while properly using circuit testers, multimeters, ammeters, megohmmeters, and digital low resistance ohmmeters.
XX Explain and demonstrate what an oscilloscope does.
XXI. Explain and demonstrate the use of an oscilloscope to make voltage and tome measurements
