Course Description: | Familiarizes the student/ropeway mechanical maintenance apprentice with gears and gear arrangements; major tasks involved in gearbox over hauls; basic principles associated with moving loads; proper use of devices designed to lift and move loads; and the various types of ladders and scaffolds that enable personnel to work at heights. Students must be employed as a ropeway maintenance apprentice or a ropeway mechanic/electrician. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Discuss the different types of gears and gear arrangements.
II. Use and understand commonly used gear terminology.
III. Identify common gear problems.
IV. Describe and demonstrate disassembly/reassembly procedures of selected gear boxes.
V. Describe and demonstrate typical checks and measures performed during gear box overhauls.
VI. Identify and describe the functions of various types of rigging equipment.
VII. Explain and demonstrate selection and inspection of equipment for a rigging job.
VIII. Describe and demonstrate how to use various lifting devices.
IX. Describe the effects of sling angles and hitch patterns on a sling`s lifting ability.
X Describe various types of rigging hardware and cranes.
XI. Explain and demonstrate use of lifting capacity charts.
XII. Describe and demonstrate how to balance loads.
XIII. Describe and demonstrate how to select and safely use the proper ladder for a job.
XIV. Describe and demonstrate general safety precautions associated with the basic operation and use of various fixed and powered scaffolds.
