 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      PERINATAL LUNG DISEASE AND OTHER PROBLEMS OF PREMATURIT
         A.      Identify the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of RSD.
         B.      Identify the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of Pulmonary Interstitial Emphysema
         C.      Identify the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of Aspiration Syndrome.
         D.      Identify the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of BPD.
         E.      Identify and describe the factors which lead to retinopathy of prematurity  (ROP), how diagnosis is made, and treatment.
         F.      Define asphyxia and identify its incidence in neonates.
         G.      Describe the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).
         H.      Identify and discuss those factors responsible for the onset of transient tachypnea of the newborn.
 II.     CAUSES OF PERSISTENT PERINATAL ILLNESS.
         A.      Explain how infections are acquired by the fetus and neonate.
         B.      Review the etiology of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
         C.      Identify the effects cytomegalovirus, rubella, herpes simplex, and toxoplasmosis on the developing fetus.
         D.      For each of the following cardiac anomalies, discuss the defect  and describe the diagnosis and treatment:
 III.    PEDIATRIC DISEASES REQUIRING RESPIRATORY CARE
         A.      Define cystic fibrosis and discuss the etiology.
         B.      Define pneumonia and pneumonitis.
         C.      Discuss the etiologies of pneumonia /pneumonitis viral, bacterial, aspiration and chemical.
         D.      Identify the epidemology, pathogenisis, diagnosis and treatment of bronchiolitis.
         E.      Discuss the causes of and pulmonary sequelae of smoke inhalation.
         F.      Define the treatment of smoke inhalation injuries acute and chronic.
         G.      Differentiate between thermal injuries and chemical aspiration injuries.
         H.      Discuss the prognosis of smoke inhalation injuries from mild to severe.
         I.      Identify the causative organisms, signs and treatment of the following:
         J.      Describe the etiology and diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.
         K.      Discuss the etiology and treatment of spinal cord injuries.
         L.      Describe the pathophysiology, signs, symptoms and treatment of asthma.
         M.      Identify five factors that indicate a risk of developing SIDS.
 IV.     SPECIAL PROCEDURES AND NONCONVENTIONAL VENTILATORY TECHNIQUES.
         A.      Describe each of the following, as they relate to surfactant replacement therapy.
         B.      Identify the major advantage of HFV.
         C.      Describe, for each of the 3 types of HFV, the following:
         D.      Describe the history of ECMO.
         E.      Describe how ECMO is initiated, the indications for termination and the complications associated with its use.
         F.      Discuss the use and advantages as well as disadvantages of negative pressure ventilation in pediatric children.
