  Course Description:Reviews the technical and epistemologic activities carried out in the first clinical rotation. Enables the student to develop a sense of reality about how the material in didactic and lab instruction exists in the clinical setting.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      During the semester the students will be given a patient assessment exam.  The student will be required to evaluate the scenario, and express in written form the physiological and homeostatic condition of the patient.   The student will also be required to make decisions about the patient and recommend therapeutic interventions.
 II.     The student will be evaluated on the following points:
         A.      The ability to gather pertinent information regarding the patient.
         B.      The ability to analyze and come to a reasonable conclusion regarding the patient¿s homeostatic condition.
         C.      The ability to clearly express in written form the physiologic and homeostatic conclusions based on the students analyze.
         D.      The appropriateness of the recommended therapeutics.
 III.    Clinical groups must be prepared to randomly present a patient that they have seen in a clinical setting, and discuss patients physiological and homeostatic condition, as well as the appropriateness of the therapeutics given to the patient.  This must be done as a group effort.  Each student will be required to present an area of patient analysis.  The students must also be prepared to answer any questions regarding the patient from the instructor as well as their peers.
 IV.     The student will be evaluated on:
         A.      Their ability to gather information on the patient.
         B.      Their ability to present the information in a scientific method.
         C.      Their ability to answer questions regarding the patients homeostatic and physiological condition.
         D.      Their ability to determine if the therapeutics delivered to the patient were appropriate.
         E.      Their ability to recommend other therapeutics that may have helped the patient.
 V.      During the semester, at pre -assigned dates, each student will present at least one oral patient case study of a patient he/she has treated during the semester.  The case study presentation will follow the guidelines as established by the `Clinical Care Model for Respiratory Care.`
 VI.     The student will be evaluated on the following points:
         A.      Presentation no longer that 20 minutes.
         B.      All necessary historical, clinical, and laboratory data clearly presented.
         C.      All data analyzed by means of the scientific method
         D.      Conclusion of patient pathology clearly stated.
         E.      Discussions of what supportive modalities were ordered.
         F.      Discussion of the effectiveness of the supportive modalities.
 VII.    An outline of the key specific points of the case must be written and copies made for all students and instructor.  This presentation must be in a professional manner. All outlines must be type written, and copies available at the time of presentation.  Please note:  the student is responsible for their own copies.  This outline must contain all of the historical, clinical, and lab data so that the class can easily follow the analysis of the data by means of the scientific method.
