  Course Description:Introduces the profession of respiratory care including history of the profession; current and future role of the respiratory care professional; role, function, and interrelationships of several professional organizations; introduces quality and evidence-base practice; patient safety, communication and record keeping; the principles of infection control; and legal and ethical implications in the practice. This is an online course.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Medical Terminology
         A.      This is a self-study area of the course.  The students will be required to complete the following chapters, and be tested on pre-assigned dates:
 II.     Chapters Testing dates:
 III.    1, 2 and 4 September 22
 IV.     5,9 and 10 October 13
 V.      14, 15 and 16 November. 3
 VI.     Pulmonary Symbols & Medical Abbreviations. December 1
 VII.    Comprehensive Final Exam December 15
         A.      The student will demonstrate his/her mastery of medical terms by the act of writing the correct definition of Medical Terminology, Pulmonary Terms and Symbols and Medical abbreviations.
                 1.      Program Structure
         B.      Explain the academic requirements of the program.
         C.      Explain the health requirements of the program.
         D.      Explain the ethical requirements of the program.
         E.      Understand the program`s stated goals.
         F.      Explain the instructional methodologies used by the program and why cognitive and noncognitive factors are critical educational concepts.
         G.      Explain how program progress is monitored and the procedure for post-graduate references.
                 1.      Discuss the three domains of objective learning
                 2.      History of the Respiratory Care Profession
         H.      Identify early philosophers, scientists and medical personnel whose discoveries and inventions led to the evolution of medicine.
         I.      Describe the work of scientist and inventors that led to the development of clinical applications of O2 therapy and mechanical ventilation.
         J.      Recount the transition from conceptual respiratory care to a scientific basis for its implementation.
         K.      Explain the history and function of the AARC.
         L.      Explain the history and function of the NBRC.
         M.      Explain the history and function of the CoARC.
