Course Description: | Explores the history of the profession including definition, development and areas of practice. The role of the APTA, the physical therapist assistant and the relationship between the physical therapist, PTA and other health care professionals are investigated. Includes current issues and trends including professionalism, ethics, quality assurance, communications and reimbursement issues such as Medicare, Medicaid, Worker's Compensation and commercial insurance. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Describe and discuss the profession of physical therapy including its history, philosophy, the various areas of practice and employment opportunities.
II. Describe the role and relationship of the physical therapist, physical therapist assistant and other health care professionals
III. Describe the structure and the role of APTA as well as the role of the PTA with the APTA.
IV. Describe current and future legal, ethical, moral, economic and legislative issues impacting the delivery of care in the health care delivery system and in physical therapy
