Course Description: | Explores the history of the profession including definition, development and areas of practice. The role of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), the physical therapist assistant (PTA) and the relationship between the physical therapist (PT), PTA and other health care professionals are investigated. This course covers current issues and trends including professionalism, legal aspects, ethics, quality assurance, communications and reimbursement issues such as Medicare, Medicaid, Worker's Compensation and commercial insurance. |

REQUIRED COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Discuss the profession of physical therapy including its history, philosophy, the various areas of practice and employment opportunities.
2. Describe the role and relationship of the physical therapist, physical therapist assistant and other health care professionals.
3. Describe the structure and the role of APTA as well as the role of the PTA with the APTA.
4. Describe current and future legal, ethical, moral, economic, and legislative issues impacting the delivery of care in the health care delivery system and in physical therapy.
5. Describe the process of continuous quality improvement and it's role in the delivery of PT services.
6. Describe issues and trends in the various modes of reimbursement for services.
7. Discuss the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice and incorporation into the field of physical therapy.
8. Discuss appropriate delegation, supervision, and utilization of the PTA and other support personnel in the provision of PT services.
9. Describe the role and responsibilities of the PT professional in the health care delivery system and in society.
