STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Describe Hans Selye`s physiological stages of the stress response.
II. Describe the function of the autonomic nervous system in responding to stress.
III. Illustrate the possible negative effects of chronic stress on the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and immune systems of the body.
IV. Describe the use of biofeedback in learning to manage the stress response.
V. Use temperature training, galvanic skin resistance, and electromyography biofeedback technology to monitor personal stress levels.
VI. Develop self-awareness of how one¿s body responds to stress.
VII. Practice and monitor the effects of physical relaxation techniques, including muscle stretching, breath work, and progressive relaxation.
VIII. Practice and monitor the effects of mental relaxation techniques, including meditation, visualization, thought awareness, and autogenic training.
IX. Practice body awareness, assertiveness, and coping skills.
