Course Description: | Apply basic serger skills to Advanced Serger Sewing techniques such as rolled hemming, decorative threading, and flatlocking to give projects/garments a creative and innovative look as well as a professional finish. After learning basic skills in Serger Sewing, add decorative flare to your garments and projects by finishing your seams and hems using decorative threads and serger features other than balanced tension. A decorative technique serger reference notebook will be completed as well as constructing decorative garments/projects. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Thread and review balanced tension on the serger machine
2. Use the serger to roll hems and flatlock decorative seams
3. Select suitable decorative threads to embellish garments
4. Construct a decorative thread garment with either balanced, rolled hem, or flatlocking
5. Use the serger to prepare samples of seams, hems, piecing, piping, and fishline flounces
6. Install a zipper on the serger
7. Construct a garment or project using specialty seam finishes, piecing or piping
8. Prepare a reference notebook with handouts and samples.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Serger Features
1. Review threading and care
2. Explain differential feed
3. Differentiate between balanced and unbalanced tension
II. Rolled Hems
1. Adjust tensions and settings to achieve a serger rolled hem
2. Thread serger with appropriate thread
3. Practice rolled hem samples
III. Flatlocking
1. Adjust needle tensions and settings to achieve flatlocking
2. Thread, adjust, and practice flatlocking samples
IV. Decorative Threads
1. Identify and differentiate between threads that will produce successful decorative serging
2. Produce decorative thread samples
3. Compile decorative thread samples and assess which will be better for different techniques
V. Decorative Thread Project
1. Select thread
2. Determine which method, balanced tension, rolled hem, or flatlocking is best suited to produce desired effect
3. Adjust settings and tension
4. Create project/garment
5. Critique project/garment
VI. Conventional Uses of Serger with Conventional Fabrics
1. Produce samples of mock flat-felled seams (jeans), French seams, matching stripes, ribbon edges, and hems
2. Insert a zipper into a sample using the serger
3. Combine samples of serger piecing
VII. Conventional uses of Serger with Different Types of Fabrics
1. Serge Nylon outerwear sample
2. Serge sweater knits using differential feed
3. Contrast the use of differential feed or even feed to reduce rippling of fabric seams
VIII. Decorative Techniques using fishline and piping
1. Serge a flounce using #25 fishing line
2. Produce a sample using serger piping
IX. Creative Garment/Project
1. Create a garment/project that incorporates previous samples
2. Evaluate garment/project
X. Reference Notebook
1. Compile all samples into a reference notebook
2. Evaluate
