Course Description: | Learn production patternmaking, grading and marking using industry standard computer systems and software. Gain an understanding of the processes and techniques used for taking apparel designs from idea to first sample to finished production garment as it relates to patternmaking, grading and marking. Students will gain hands on experience making patterns and correcting patterns using CAD/PDS software. They will also set up size systems and grade the patterns as well as make production markers. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Apply apparel industry production standards as they relate to patternmaking, grading and marking.
2. Demonstrate hands on experience using state of the art computers and CAD/PDS software for the fashion industry
3. Demonstrate understanding of first and production patternmaking, as well as grading and marking for the apparel industry.

I. Apparel industry production standards as they relate to patternmaking
a. Describe the differences between home sewing and sewing for the industry
b. Recognize and apply solutions applied in the software demo
II. Drawing basic polygons and pattern shapes
III. Basic Shapes and Terminology
a. Turn basic shapes into patterns using seam allowances and notches
b. Describe industry labeling
c. Show how to use direction cards/cutter’s must
IV. Pattern Manipulation
a. Make patterns from blocks using darts and pleats
b. Make patterns for linings and interfacings
V. Grading
a. Introduce theories of grading
b. Apply methods of grading
c. Set up grade charts
d. Grade patterns
VI. Markers
a. Describe production cut planning
b. Identify marker breakdowns
c. Tabulate yardages
d. Measure yield percentages
