  Course Description:Learn the principles and methods of draping. Draping is a 3-dimentional method of making apparel patterns by sculpting with fabric directly on a dress form. Students will learn how to incorporate three draping techniques manipulating dart excess, adding fullness, and contour draping in design projects. After draping, the fabric is removed from the dress form and used to create the sewing pattern for the garment.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Recognize, name, and use pattern drafting tools, equipment and terminology
 2. Identify the importance of the fabric grain in relationship to the desired design
 3. Manipulate fabric on a dress form and obtain harmony between fabric and design
 4. Stimulate creativity by handling and sculpting with a variety of fabrics to
 5. Develop a sense of proportion, placement of style lines and good design
 6. Evaluate the fit, hang and balance of garments
 7. Interpret flat sketches into muslin mock-ups and patterns


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I. Dress form
 a. Select and make a dress form
 b.   Tape the hipline on the dress form
 
 II. Draping
 a. Explain fabric grain and hand
 b. Explain draping principles
 c. Demonstrate basic skirt
 d. Begin draping basic skirt
 e. Transfer to paper, and true up pattern.
 III. Skirt
 a. Cut skirt
 b. Sew and fit on dress form
 c. Alter pattern if needed.
 IV. Basic Bodice
 a. Demonstrate and begin bodice drape
 b. Transfer to paper, true up pattern, cut, sew, and fit on dress form.
 c. Alter pattern if needed.
 d. Manipulate darts
 e. Draft  sleeve pattern
 f. Cut, sew, and set sleeve in bodice
 V. Collars and Necklines
 a. Demonstrate variety of collars and necklines.
 b. Drape or draft collars.
 c. Transfer to paper, true up pattern, cut, sew and set on collar on bodice.
 d. Fit on dress form and alter pattern if needed.
 VI. Strapless / Princess Torso Drape
 a. Demonstrate and drape strapless/princess torso style
 b. Transfer to paper, true up pattern
 c. Complete torso drape: cut, sew and fit on dress form, alter pattern if needed.
 VII. Pleated peg skirt
 a. Demonstrate  and drape pegged skirt
 b. Transfer to paper, true up pattern,
 c. Cut, sew and fit on dress form.
 d. Alter pattern if needed.
 VIII. Bias Slip Dress
 a. Demonstrate and drape bias slip dress
 b. Transfer to paper, true up pattern
 IX. c.    Cut, sew, and fit on dress form
 X. Design and construct the FINAL Cocktail Garment
 a. Drape, pattern, mock-up, fit a final cocktail garment
 b. Correct pattern, cut, sew, and conduct final fit
 c. Finish sewing final project
