Course Description: | Examine the three major patternmaking principles: Dart Rotation, Adding Fullness and Contouring. Students will analyze styles different from basic garments and explain which principles is needed to achieve the design. Designed for intermediate to advanced sewers and will improve student’s ability to engineer “flat patterns” to attain the desired style. After finishing required projects participants may proceed with independent study. Students will design and produce a unique project for the final. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Recognize, name, and use patternmaking engineering tools, equipment and terminology.
2. Rotate darts to various locations on a bodice template using both slash and pivot methods.
3. Combine darts to create unique style lines.
4. Create flare in skirts by eliminating darts and pivoting in flare.
5. Slash and spread to add fullness.
6. Apply contouring guidelines to strapless or empire dress.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Basic bodice
a. Experiment with basic bodice and basic skirt from draping class
b. Modify basic bodice and skirt pattern that you draped on your dress form
II. Dart Rotation
a. Combine two darts on basic bodice to create unique style line
b. True-up seam line, cut, sew and check for correct fit
c. Invent “intersecting darts” or curved darts
d. Demonstrate techniques such as pivoting for flare
III. Adding Fullness
a. Slash and spread basic bodice or basic skirt to add fullness as in gathers or pleats
b. Compare the three types of added fullness: Equal fullness, One-sided fullness and Unequal fullness
c. Create design with fullness added, cut mock-up, sew and fit mock-up
IV. Contouring
a. Measure and reduce pattern in appropriate area for low neckline
b. Develop pattern for Empire style
c. Create design for strapless using contouring guidelines, cut mock-up, sew and fit mock-up
V. Final Project
a. Plan, design and sketch final project using any combinations of flat patternmaking
b. Develop pattern for the style, create mock-up, sew, fit and correct pattern.
c. Cut out fashion fabric, sew, fit and complete garment with finished elements
