Course Description: | Learn basic sewing techniques needed to sew with knowledge and confidence. Course is designed for beginners and will provide a practical introduction to sewing. Skills will be developed with “hands-on’’ experience in basic sewing methods and operating a sewing machine. Students will make samples and create a notebook to use as a reference throughout the program. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Recognize, name, and demonstrate using measuring tools, equipment and terminology.
2. Identify and name basic parts of a sewing/industrial machine.
3. Operate an industrial power machine with safety and precision.
4. Demonstrate how to do seams, hems, facings, garment details and collars.
5. Make and compile samples to create a reference notebook
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Industrial power/Domestic home machine
1. Practice safety and safety rules
2 Demonstrate how to use paper and fabric exercises, sewing straight lines
3 Identify basic parts of a sewing machine
4. Demonstrate how to thread a sewing machine
5. Gain confidence in using a sewing machine
II. Reference notebook
1. Construct samples of seams, finishes, hems, etc,
2. Make Facings and Collar Samples
3. Create samples to include details such as pleats, tucks, darts and gathering
