  Course Description:Learn to use tools, equipment and basic sewing techniques in garment construction. Course is designed for beginners and will provide a practical introduction to sewing skills. Demonstrate how to measure, mark, alter patterns, cut fabric, set up and use the sewing machine. Students will construct three projects, elastic pants, shirt with collar, sleeves, and buttonholes and a bag.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Identify by name basic parts of a domestic/industrial sewing machine .
 2. Operate an industrial machine with safety and precision.
 3. Operate a domestic sewing machine with safety and precision.
 4. Apply basic principles of pattern, fabric, and notion selection to garment construction.
 5. Demonstrate how to read a pattern envelope, layout fabric & pattern, how to cut, and to mark the pattern.
 6. Demonstrate knowledge of seams, seam finishes, elastic waistband, hems, facings, collar, sleeves, and buttonholes by constructing elastic waist pants and a top with collar, sleeves, and buttonholes.
 7. Evaluate the garments construction for professional standards.
 8. Construct and evaluate basic bag.
