  Title:Legal Aspects of Corrections
  Long Title:Legal Aspects of Corrections
  Course Description:Offers an overview of supervision of inmates in the local, state and federal correctional institutions. The issues of control in a continuum from institutional daily living, through crisis situations will be discussed. The course will emphasize the roles played by the offender, the correctional worker and the interaction between them. Topics will include inmate subculture, violence, and the effects of overcrowding on inmates and staff. Coping techniques for the correctional officer in a prison environment will also be discussed. This course will also cover the ramifications of the use of hostile and abusive tactics.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Students will be able to explain the roles, views and goals of correctional leadership.
 II.     Students will be able to formulate and write a serviceable vision, mission plan and strategic plan for a correctional institution.
 III.    Students will be able to discuss the various functions of prison within society.
 IV.     Students will be able to describe various programs and services offered by prisons, including the needs they meet and the goals of each program and service.
 V.      Students will be able to describe various modalities for risk assessment and explain the pros and cons of each.
 VI.     Students will be able to discuss general safety objectives.
 VII.    Students will be able to list threats to the safety of staff and inmates.
 VIII.   Students will understand the importance of clear, planned emergency procedures.
 IX.     Students will have knowledge of various lethal and non-lethal force tactics available to correctional staff.
 X       Students will have a deeper understanding of the issue of prison overcrowding and its effects.  In addition, students will be able to explore preventatives and reforms for the issue of prison overcrowding.
 XI.     Students will discuss the various methods of inmate discipline, the ramifications and logistics of each.
 XII.    Students will be able to describe and explain inmate rights, Constitutional and otherwise.
 XIII.   Students will have an understanding of landmark cases with regards to inmate rights and the ramifications of those cases.
 XIV.    Students will define and describe the institutions role in providing for basic needs.
 XV.     Students shall be able to articulate various correctional administrative trends.
 XVI.    Students shall be able to hypothesize as to the future in correction administration in the American criminal justice system with emphasis on cost, overcrowding and privatization.
