  Course Description:Designed to provide the student with an orientation to the corrections system and current trends in privatization. An overview of the history and trends in juvenile and adult corrections will be covered, including probation and parole. This course will focus on legal issues, specific laws relating to corrections and the general operations of correctional institutions. The student will have an opportunity to explore various career options in various subsections of corrections and will receive a better understanding of the complexity of the correction system within the United States. The relationship between corrections and other components of the criminal justice system will also be examined.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Describe a historical overview of corrections.
 II.     Explain correctional ideology to date and hypothesize as to its future.
 III.    Describe a general overview of the current correctional system and its components.
 IV.     Understand the various job opportunities within the correctional system as they apply to them.
 V.      Comprehend and describe various choices in sentencing, and how these decisions are made.
 VI.     Describe various types of alternative sentencing.
 VII.    Describe the prison system in the United States in general.
 VIII.   Discuss the traditional functions of incarceration.
 IX.     Describe and explain inmate rights, Constitutional and otherwise.
 X       Explain correctional systems options after release, including parole, community corrections and other reintegration procedures.
 XI.     Articulate various correctional trends.
 XII.    Hypothesize as to the future in corrections in the American criminal justice system.
