  Course Description:This course is designed to give the student a realistic work experience in the field. Work is supervised by park rangers currently employed by land management agencies at various levels of government. These preceptors ensure that the students participate in relevant field work and that they perform to the standards expected of employees of the agencies in which the internship occurs.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Apply Basic job skills
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Demonstrate the ability to be punctual, reliable, and professional in demeanor, attitude and appearance.
                 2.      Communicate effectively in writing and verbally in a professional manner that is consistent with the sponsoring agency.
 II.     Demonstrate appropriate methods for cultural and natural resource interpretation as it applies to the sponsoring agency
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Choose and apply the appropriate interpretive techniques for professional public education programs and tours.
                 2.      Construct interpretive programs that are sensitive to the diverse visitor population that is currently visiting parks in the United States.
                 3.      obtain, compare and contrast research information that is utilized in the interpretive program to insure a high level of professional knowledge and depth of program development.
 III.    Compare, contrast, and apply various law enforcement techniques
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Determine appropriate level of authority and the appropriate action based on the situation and the training of the ranger.
                 2.      Develop appropriate sensitivity to diverse cultural issues that affect law enforcement situations.
                 3.      Apply interpretive techniques to law enforcement situations in natural and cultural resource situations.
                 4.      Apply principles of conflict management to multi-use conflict situations. -Research appropriate laws and statutes to apply to park law enforcement situations.
 IV.     Apply skills and techniques for various Visitor Service situations.
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Research and apply techniques of trail design, construction and maintenance, including fencing.
                 2.      Apply appropriate maintenance techniques for the proper care of park resources and facilities.
                 3.      Apply appropriate Emergency Medical Service techniques for injured visitors.
                 4.      Apply appropriate Wildland Fire skills necessary for Prescribed Fire and Emergency Fire operations and suppression.
