  Course Description:Enables the student to develop, acquire and apply outdoor leadership skills and knowledge. Exposes students to the latest information, philosophy, and techniques necessary to safely conduct outdoor programs and expeditions as an outdoor leader. Skills are applied under actual field conditions. Emphasizes minimum impact camping, wilderness ecology, judgment, decision making, group dynamics, and trip logistics. These skills enhance the effectiveness of the student as a professional outdoor leader.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Identify and Describe the development of Leisure Services
         A.      The student should be able to: Describe the history and trends of Leisure Services.
         B.      The student should be able to: Analyze future trends and predict their impact on the future of Leisure services.
 II.     Apply principles of Leadership.
         A.      The student should be able to: Identify leadership qualities, skills and abilities.
         B.      The student should be able to: Apply these qualities, skills, and abilities in actual field conditions common to outdoor programs and expeditions.
         C.      The student should be able to: Analyze and demonstrate the seven steps to sound outdoor judgment and decision making.
         D.      The student should be able to: Assess group dynamics and its application to interpersonal relationships in field conditions.
         E.      The student should be able to: Determine and demonstrate to methods of the trip planning process to include goals and objectives of the trip, logistics, delegation of responsibilities, and safety.
 III.    Identify and describe the principles of environmental ethics.
         A.      The student should be able to: Apply and demonstrate the principles of the Leave No Trace (LNT) of wilderness use.
 IV.     Compare and contrast basic outdoor and survival skills.
         A.      The student should be able to: Demonstrate outdoor and survival skills as they apply to mountain, desert, and winter environments, with LNT principles applied.
 V.      Assess safety conditions and choose appropriate methods. The student should be able to: Identify environmental hazards and methods of mitigation as it applies to a variety of conditions and environments.
         A.      The student should be able to: Apply current methods of avalanche recognition and rescue.
         B.      The student should be able to: Apply knowledge of weather and demonstrate appropriate judgment and action based on the student`s assessment of the conditions.
 VI.     Assess common problems in the field.
         A.      The student should be able to: Identify common client based field problems and design appropriate plans for solution.
 VII.    Assess the value of new technology.
         A.      The student should be able to: Select and examine new equipment and determine its value and how and where it can be obtained.
