  Course Description:Focuses on specialized training related to the park ranger field and includes handling of livestock, fence design, building and repair, vehicle driving, park maintenance, budgeting and planning, trail design, construction, and maintenance. This is a hands on course for development and application of skills.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Demonstrate safe and appropriate methods of handling livestock.
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Identify common types of livestock grazing in or near park areas
                 2.      Assess appropriate response to the situation involving livestock
                 3.      Demonstrate proper method of moving stock
                 4.      Demonstrate safe operation around horses
                 5.      Identify hazards of livestock and visitors
                 6.      Determine proper methods for dealing with multi-use conflict involving livestock
 II.     Demonstrate knowledge of Fencing.
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Classify various fence design types and their uses
                 2.      Demonstrate appropriate fence building by type
                 3.      Demonstrate proper fence repair
                 4.      Determine the most appropriate repair for type of fence
 III.    Demonstrate safe vehicle driving for park personnel
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Apply safe driving procedures in park type vehicle
                 2.      Determine when four wheel drive is to be used
                 3.      Demonstrate proper methods of placing vehicle into and out of four wheel drive
                 4.      Demonstrate safe off-road operation
                 5.      Determine proper off-road travel route in relation to safety and resource protection
                 6.      Appraise significant laws related to off-road use of vehicles
 IV.     Compare and Contrast various park budget and planning systems.
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Describe various methods of budget and planning
                 2.      Choose appropriate methods related to individual parks
                 3.      Assess how planning and budget work with other branches of park operations
 V.      Compare and Contrast various methods of Trail design, construction, and maintenance.
         A.      The student should be able to:
                 1.      Assess the pros and cons of various trail designs
                 2.      Apply pros and cons to the terrain to decide on design
                 3.      Demonstrate proper and safe construction techniques
                 4.      Demonstrate proper and safe tool use
                 5.      Demonstrate tool maintenance
                 6.      Choose appropriate maintenance and repair techniques for a given trail
                 7.      Demonstrate proper and safe repair technique
                 8.      Identify causes of trail degradation
                 9.      Choose appropriate solutions to prevent trail degradation
                 10.     Analyze how budget and planning affect trail design, construction, and repair
