Course Description: | Teaches the fundamentals of swimming including the front crawl, elementary backstroke, back crawl, and the fundamentals of treading water. Students may also be introduced to the breaststroke and sidestroke and the basics of turning at a wall. This course is for the non-swimmer or novice swimmer looking to improve aquatic skills. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Review the science of swimming and water.
A. Employ various breath control methods.
B. Practice basic swimming skills and locomotion in the water.
C. Demonstrate the elementary backstroke, front/back crawl, and the correct kick with and without a kick board.
D. Review the breaststroke, sidestroke, and basic turns.
E. Use rescue skills
F. Review aerobic training principles.
G. Recognize spinal injuries and how to care for them.
