  Course Description:Serves as an advanced course for individuals interested in reaching a higher level of total fitness via an aerobic circuit training program. Includes an individual fitness evaluation, computerized analysis of results, and a prescribed exercise program. Focuses on the basic components of fitness including flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and body composition. Weight machines, stationary bicycles, and computerized cardiovascular equipment are used to elicit improvements in fitness.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      These outcomes do not necessarily reflect the exact sequence or full scope of the course materials.
 II.     To recognize the role of form, intensity, duration and frequency as components of an exercise program.
 III.    To apply tests of flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness and body composition to assess fitness level.
 IV.     To review the contents of a computerized analysis of each of the components of fitness evaluated.
 V.      To design realistic improvement goals in each of the areas tested.
 VI.     To recognize the basic components of a proper warm-up and cool-down.
 VII.    To formulate a basic understanding of the concept of ¿Aerobic Circuit Training¿.
 VIII.   To use the concept of monitoring heart rate to assess intensity of exercise.
 IX.     To practice circuit training program as part of each workout.
 X       To use other exercise options including the cardiovascular equipment, specialized weight machines, and dumbbells that are available in the Fitness Center.
 XI.     To examine current findings in the area of exercise, physical fitness and wellness via readings included in the Fitness Center manual.


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I.      Introduction to Basic Exercise Principles and the significance of form, intensity, duration and frequency as they relate to an exercise program.
 II.     Review of medical history and fitness goals.
 III.    Assessment of blood pressure, heart rate, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness and body composition.
 IV.     Review of computerized analysis of all fitness components evaluated.
 V.      Essential elements of a proper warm-up and cool-down.
 VI.     Introduction to Aerobic Circuit Training.
 VII.    Introduction to additional exercise options including specialized weight machines, dumbbells, and cardiovascular machines.
 VIII.   Reassessment of blood pressure, heart rate, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness and body composition.
 IX.     Reading assignments over the following units in the Fitness Center manual: Basic Exercise Principles, Warm-up and Cool-down, Special Exercises for the Back, Knee and Shoulder Joint Care, The Role of Diet in a Total Fitness Program, and Guidelines for a Strength Building Program.
