Course Description: | Prepares the physician assistant student to assess and manage geriatric patients. The student provides care to patients under the direct supervision of a practicing clinician (preceptor). Clerkships are 4 weeks long. |

Demonstrate within the appropriate geriatric practice setting the following skills:
1. Obtain and document a complete medical history
2. Perform and document a complete physical exam
3. Perform and document a focused physical exam
4. Recognize normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology in a patient
5. Correlate abnormal physical examination findings to a given disease process
6. Generate a problem list
7. Generate a differential diagnosis
8. Identify conditions that constitute a medical emergency
9. Identify indications for hospital admission
10. Write a SOAP note
11. Write hospital admission orders, progress notes, discharge notes
12. Write procedure notes
13. Orally present: medical history, physical exam, differential diagnosis, treatment plan
14. Interact effectively within multidisciplinary teams
15. Obtain a consultation
16. Make a referral
17. Generate and deliver a patient education plan
18. Develop and document a treatment plan
19. Develop and document a discharge plan
20. Select appropriate clinical therapeutics and calculate dosages
21. Use clinical therapeutics reference materials
22. Write a prescription
23. Explain and obtain informed consent
24. Use universal precautions
25. Order & interpret laboratory tests
26. Order & interpret diagnostic imaging studies and procedures.
27. Manage an airway and initiate and manage oxygen therapy
28. Initiate and manage IV fluid resuscitation
29. Perform otoscopy
30. Perform ophthalmoscopy
31. Perform transillumination
32. Obtain and evaluate vital signs: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration
33. Obtain and evaluate: height, weight, head circumference, girth, BMI
34. Prepare and handle laboratory specimens
35. Perform and interpret a urinalysis with microscopy
36. Perform a KOH and saline wet prep
37. Perform a fingerstick for hematocrit and blood sugar evaluations
38. Perform and interpret an electrocardiogram
39. Use sterile technique: set up and maintain a sterile field
40. Perform surgical scrub, sterile gowning and gloving
41. Perform wound closure: suture, staples, adhesives
42. Recognize and apply splints and slings
43. Apply and remove casts
44. Perform venipuncture
45. Give injections: intramuscular and subcutaneous
46. Demonstrate adequate knowledge for use of the following:
urinary catheterization
spirometry; perform and interpret
endotracheal intubation
ocular tonometry
nasal packing
foreign body removal: skin, nose, ears, eyes
lumbar puncture
anuscopy and hemorrhoid treatment
dermal biopsy: shave, punch, excision
nasogastric ntubation
incision and drainage abcess
local anesthesia including digital blocks
ingrown toenail removal
subungual hematoma, evacuation
cerumen removal
use of counseling techniques in a primary care setting
arterial blood gases
auscultate/monitor fetal heart sounds
central line insertion
chest tube insertion
flourescein stain eye exam
joint injections
nebulizer treatment
normal spontaneous vaginal delivery
slit lamp
PEG tube insertion and removal
wound debridement
reduction of dislocations and fractures
dictation of medical records and use of electronic medical record
