  Course Description:Prepares the physician assistant student to assess and manage patients within the setting of the family medicine practice. The student provides care to patients under the direct supervision of a practicing clinician (preceptor). Clerkships are 4 weeks long. This is a continuation of PAP 240.

 Demonstrate within the appropriate practice setting the following skills:
 1. Obtain and document a complete medical history
 2. Perform and document a complete physical exam
 3. Perform and document a focused physical exam
 4. Recognize normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology in a patient
 5. Correlate abnormal physical examination findings to a given disease process
 6. Generate a problem list
 7. Generate a differential diagnosis
 8. Identify conditions that constitute a medical emergency
 9. Identify indications for hospital admission
 10. Write a SOAP note
 11. Write hospital admission orders, progress notes, discharge notes
 12. Write procedure notes
 13. Orally present: medical history, physical exam, differential diagnosis, treatment plan
 14. Interact effectively within multidisciplinary teams
 15. Obtain a consultation
 16. Make a referral
 17. Generate and deliver a patient education plan
 18. Develop and document a treatment plan
 19. Develop and document a discharge plan

 42. Recognize and apply splints and slings

  urinary catheterization
  spirometry; perform and interpret

  lumbar puncture
  anuscopy and hemorrhoid treatment
  dermal biopsy:  shave, punch, excision
  nasogastric ntubation
  incision and drainage abcess
  local anesthesia including digital blocks
  ingrown toenail removal
  subungual hematoma, evacuation
  cerumen removal
  use of counseling techniques in a primary care setting
  arterial blood gases
  auscultate/monitor fetal heart sounds
