  Course Description:Requires senior physician assistant students to present actual clinical cases they have seen during clinical clerkships. Students must analyze and evaluate clinical cases, and prepare case presentations in a ¿grand rounds¿ type format. Senior students will act as mentors to junior students in the small group setting. This course also presents evidence-based health care as it relates to clinical outcomes. This course is a continuation of PAP 235.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Apply an evidence-based approach to health care
       a. For a specific clinical situation, assess existing evidence and provide practical solutions
       b. The team approach to health care
       c. Psychotherapeutic techniques
 2. Apply the principals of evidence-based health care and understand the main controversies surrounding its application
       a. Describe the potential strengths and weaknesses of evidence-based health care
       b. Analyze particular clinical scenarios from both an individual and population perspective
       c. Apply knowledge of the medical literature to search for relevant articles, critically appraise the information and integrate useful findings
       d. Distinguish questions that can potentially be answered from the medical literature from those that require other sources of information
       e. Identify appropriate research designs for a clinical question
       f. Construct a search strategy to retrieve relevant research articles
       g. Assess the significance of any relevant data and critically evaluate the application and implementation of the results
 3. Describe and evaluate drugs and treatment regimes
       a. Develop a sound scientific basis for analyzing the pathology of a particular disease
       b. Differentiate various conditions, and describe the clinical manifestations of a particular disease with respect to the underlying physiology
       c. Describe the use, indications and contraindications of pharmacotherapeutics used in treatment of a particular disease
       d. When given patient specific parameters, recommend an appropriate drug and explain rationale for choice
       e. Develop an appropriate management plan when presented with a patient with potential drug interaction
 4. Synthesize and analyze information from a variety of sources to evaluate case studies
       a. Evaluate presenting signs and symptoms, physical findings and laboratory evidence
       b. Distinguish between pertinent positive and negative physical findings
       c. Develop a working differential diagnosis based on patient history and evaluation
       d. Construct a differential diagnosis list and make a diagnosis from the differential
       e. Describe indications for referral or consultation
       f. Develop diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans
       g. Develop patient education materials


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I.      Case topics are selected by the student and are based on the clinical experience of the senior student while on clerkships.
