  Course Description:This course provides advanced-level experience in whitewater raft handling and water reading skills through direct experiences on selected rivers. Students will learn advanced rafting techniques, river trip planning, advanced river safety procedures, equipment, logistics, camp management, hazard evaluation, minimum impact techniques, and the natural history of river environments. Added emphasis will be placed on approaching material from the professional river-guide’s perspective. (Pre-requisites: OUT-118, OUT-121, OUT-122, OUT-204, or instructor permission). Minimum age: 17.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge and/or skills in the following areas:
 1. Demonstrate understanding and skill-sets for transport, repair, and maintenance care for rafts on short or extended trips.
 2. Demonstrate understanding of advanced safety equipment and its application to river rescue.
 3. Evaluate potential hazardous river conditions, obstacles, and situations in a safe manner.
 4. Demonstrate understanding of advanced paddle and oar raft handling techniques.
 5. Properly navigate rafts in class I-V water
 6. Interpretation of geology, geography, archaeology, flora and fauna of selected river environments.
 7. Demonstrate knowledge and skill-sets for all aspects of river camping including site selection, cooking, Leave No Trace minimum impact practices, and safety procedures.
 8. Demonstrate understanding of group and individual leadership in backcountry river locations.
 9. Identification of local, state, and federal river-running regulations where applicable.
 10. Identify and demonstrate understanding of resource management issues related to selected river environments.

 1. Basic and advanced river running equipment.
 2. Equipment transport and logistical considerations.
 3. Raft maintenance & care.
 4. Advanced safety equipment, including wrap-kits and Z-drags.
 5. River rescue and safety.
 6. Advanced paddle-boat techniques including commands and strokes.
 7. Advanced oar-boat techniques including multiple ferry angles, pivot turns, double-oar turns, and Portegee stroke applications.
 8. Boat handling techniques for higher grade whitewater.
 9. Expedition repair kits and boat repair.
 10. Hazardous river conditions, obstacles, scouting methods, and evaluation.
 11. On-water skills training: How to read water and navigate watercraft.
 12. River camping methods and equipment use techniques, including camp safety.
 13. River natural history, geology, and archaeology interpretation techniques.
 14. Group and individual leadership applications.
 15. Local, state, federal river regulations, and permitting processes.
 16. River-related resource management issues.
 17. Minimum impact and Leave No Trace approaches to river environments.
