Course Description: | Focuses on the beginning sailor and is taught by American Sailing Association Certified Instructors and meets the safety requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard. The class is divided into two parts: Theory Classes and Sailing Sessions. Covers terminology, safety regulations, knots, sailing theory, and navigation. Sailing sessions include rigging, getting underway, safety rules, tacking, gibing, bearing away, boat handling in different weather conditions, overboard rescue, returning to the dock, and anchoring. Course costs include all boating equipment, textbooks, handouts, class materials, and the use of a 21` day sailor. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Recall basic theories of sailing, and nomenclature of sailing terms.
A. Know USCG Sailing rules and regulations.
B. List appropriate sailing clothing and equipment.
C. Apply the skills of basic open water navigation using appropriate charts.
D. Navigate a multi-leg course of sail.
E. Know and apply the skills for rigging a sailboat and getting ready to sail.
F. Demonstrate the principles of safe boat handling and sailing techniques and skills.
G. Understand and apply the techniques needed for a man-overboard rescue.
