Course Description: | Introduces the student to survival plants of the Southwest with a focus on the geographical region of Americas Great Southwest Deserts including the states of New Mexico, Arizona, southern Utah, Nevada & Colorado. In class utilization of live, pressed, and dried specimens. Indoor class emphasis allows botanical exploration of wild useful plants year-round. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Identify wild useful plants of Arizona’s Grand Canyon and Flagstaffs mountainous region
2. Recognize wild useful plants of Arizona’s Mogollon Rim and Oak Creek Canyon
3. Examine wild useful plants of Arizona’s Sonoran & Mojave Deserts and the Sky Islands
4. Study wild useful plants of Utah’s Dixie national Forest and the Canyonlands region
5. Identify wild useful plants of Nevada’s Spring mountains and the Las Vegas area
6. Recognize wild useful plants of New Mexico’s Gila River drainage and Lincoln national Forest.
7. Examine wild useful plants of New Mexico’s Malpais region
8. Study wild useful plants of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains
9. Participate in a local field trip to find and identify Colorado plants that are found in our regional study area.
