Course Description: | Provides an overview of at least two of the following winter sports: alpine skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, telemark skiing, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, or skate skiing. Enables the student to gain the knowledge and techniques necessary for winter sports on beginner to intermediate groomed or backcountry terrain. Incorporates multiple field trips to ski areas or other outdoor venues. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Identify proper techniques for dressing for the cold and recognizing the physiology of the cold.
II. Identify the elements associated with hypothermia and frostbite and treating both conditions.
III. Identify methods for protecting the skin and eyes from sun exposure while engaging in winter sports
IV. Recognizing potential avalanche hazards and awareness of survival and rescue procedures in the backcountry.
V. Recognize the legal risks and liabilities assumed when snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, or ice skating
VI. Recognize the proper accident procedures for on slope incidents.
VII. Recognize the ski area safety rules.
VIII. Recognize ski area boundaries.
IX. Recognize the color-coded ski trail signage.
X Evaluate and select the different types winter sports equipment.
XI. Recognize the importance of preparing you body and cardio-respiratory endurance.
XII. Discuss the benefits of muscular strength and endurance and flexibility.
XIII. Demonstrate the fundamental skills for the appropriate winter sport activity
XIV. Demonstrate how to control speed and changing direction with turns.
