  Course Description:Provides skills related to wilderness travel and outdoor adventure. Emphasizes knowledge of backpacking skills, survival techniques, proper physical conditioning, route finding, equipment selection, and an understanding and respect for the environment. The course incorporates lecture and discussion sessions followed by a weekend trip in the mountains.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
         A.      Employ proper preparation for backpacking.
         B.      Identify the different types and sizes of packs and how to correctly fit packs.
         C.      Review how to organize the pack suitable to the length for the trip.
         D.      Discuss how to wisely select a campsite.
         E.      Employ proper sanitation practices and courtesy to others in the campsite.
         F.      Demonstrate correctly choosing and organizing a kitchen.
         G.      Evaluate the environment and how to avoid inclement weather and rough terrain.
         H.      Practice how to utilize a compass and read contour maps.
         I.      Demonstrate how to move across the various types of rough terrain.
         J.      Demonstrate the proper way to fill and adjust a backpack along with walking with a pack.
         K.      Employ setting up camp and equipment.
         L.      Formulate a comprehensive plan for the trip.
