  Course Description:This field experience course provides whitewater boat handling and reading skills through experience on selected rivers in Colorado and Utah. Students will learn river trip planning, safety procedures, equipment, logistics, camp management, hazard evaluation and minimum environmental impact on environments. Safe and efficient river travel, leadership and judgment development are emphasized.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Transport, repair, and adequately care for rafts on short or extended trips.
 II.     Use and become familiar with safety equipment and its application to river rescue.  Evaluate potential hazardous river conditions, obstacles, and situations in a safe manner.
 III.    Properly navigate rafts in Class I-III water.
 IV.     Geology, geography, archaeology, flora, and fauna of river environments.
 V.      Manage all aspects of river camping, including site selection,
 cooking, sanitation, and safety procedures.
 VI.     Group and individual dynamics in backcountry river locations.
 VII.    Local, state and federal river running regulations.
 VIII.   Issues and ideas related to minimum impact approaches to river environments.
 IX.     Introduction and fundamentals of outdoor leadership and group handling skills as they relate to river raft travel.
 X       Development of good quality judgment relating to river raft travel.

 III.    Equipment repair and transport
 IV.     Discussion of hazardous river conditions and obstacles
 V.      River rescue/safety
 VI.     On-water skills training:
                 1.      - how to read water and navigate water craft
         A.      River camping
         B.      Ongoing discussion of river natural history, geology and archaeology
         C.      Discussion of group and individual dynamics
         D.      Discussion of local, state, and federal river regulations
         E.      Discussion and practice of minimal impact approaches to river environment
         F.      Techniques for safe and efficient river travel with groups
         G.      Fundamentals of outdoor leadership and group handling skills in the back country river environment
         H.      Using experiences gained through whitewater rafting to develop judgment relating to outdoor leadership
