Course Description: | Provides basic kayak and water reading skills. The students will learn boating safety, hazard evaluation, terminology, whitewater river reading skills, paddling strokes, bracing techniques, peel out and eddy turns, and rescue and self rescue techniques including wet exits, Eskimo rescues and introduction to and practice of the Eskimo roll. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge and/or skills in the following areas:
A. Whitewater reading and evaluation of river hazards.
B. Equipment and boating terminology.
C. Kayaking and river safety.
D. Paddling techniques such as backstroke, forward stroke, bracing, skulling, eddy turns, peel outs, and sweepstrokes.
E. Basic recovery techniques including Eskimo roll, wet exits, and eskimo rescue.
F. Handling of kayak in moving water.
G. Kayak rescue.

X Four cautions

XI. Discussion of CRS water measurement
XII. The 10 commandments
A. Lean into rocks
B. Learn into curling waves
C. When about to flip, take a breath
D. When swimming, remain upstream of kayak
E. When swimming, keep feet high, knees bent, facing downstream hazards
F. When swimming, never stand up in fast-moving current
G. Try self-rescue first (eskimo roll, T-rescue). If necessary, exit
XIII. boat and swim to safety
