Course Description: | Provides basic kayak and water reading skills. The student will learn boating safety, hazard evaluation, terminology, whitewater river reading skills, paddling strokes, bracing techniques including wet exists, Eskimo rescues and introduction to the Eskimo roll. Safe, efficient river travel, leadership and judgment will be emphasized. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Evaluate river hazards and safe paths through Whitewater.
2. Evaluate river equipment and use boating terminology.
3. Employ safe kayaking and river safety skills.
4. Demonstrate techniques such as back stroke, forward stroke, bracing, skulling, eddy turns, peel outs, and sweep strokes.
5. Demonstrate recovery techniques including Eskimo roll, wet exits, and Eskimo rescue.
6. Demonstrate safe handling of kayak in moving water.
7. Employ kayak rescue techniques.
8. Practice safety awareness regarding group instruction.
9. Demonstrate good judgment relating to river kayaking.
