  Course Description:Provides whitewater boat handling and water reading skills through experience on selected rivers. Students will learn river trip planning, river safety procedures, equipment, logistics, camp management, hazard evaluation, the natural history and archeology of river environments and minimum environmental impact on river environments.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Transport, repair and adequately care for rafts, canoes, or kayaks on
 II.     short or extended trips.
 III.    Use and become familiar with safety equipment and its application to river rescue.  Evaluate potential hazardous river conditions, obstacles and situations in a safe manner.
 IV.     Properly navigate rafts, canoes, and kayaks in Class I-III water.
 V.      Geology, geography, archaeology, flora and fauna of river environments.
 VI.     Manage all aspects of river camping including site selection, cooking,
 VII.    sanitation and safety procedures.
 VIII.   Group and individual dynamics in backcountry river locations.
 IX.     Local, state and federal river running regulations.
 X       Issues and ideas related to minimum impact approaches to river
 XI.     environments.
